Dolphins By Chris Proccacino

Food and Hunting Normal Dolphins eat Squid and fish (Specifically Herring and Mackerel). But Killer Whales have a MUCH bigger diet. They eat Seals, Whales, Porpoises, Birds, and even other dolphins! They use Echolocation to hunt in muddy water. That means they make sounds and when they echo back, it finds it way around. They hunt in groups called Pods.

Habitats Dolphins live pretty much in every ocean. They don’t, however, live in The Arctic and southern oceans and also near South Africa. They live in the sunlit layer of the ocean, where there is most food, fish, animals and sunlight. They live mostly in coral reefs. They also live near the shore sometimes.

Body/Body Parts Dolphins have a simple body. They have 3 fins. The top is called the Dorsal fin. The other 2 are the flippers. The tail helps them move around the water. They have flukes on the tail. They have sharp teeth and their mouth is on the beak. Their skin is blue-gray with a white belly. They use the blowhole to breathe. It closes after it breaths so water won’t get in.

Evolution and Species Dolphins may have used to be land animals. People found this out because a dolphins flipper bone looks kind of like a hand and the tail bone looks like a leg bone. Dolphins are part of a group of animals called Cetacean Mammals. Cetacean mammals include Whales and Porpoises. They're 32 different types of dolphins.

Behavior Dolphins tend to have very playful human-like behavior. They can be taught to do things that humans do, fly through hoops and catch balls. Despite being playful, they save people from drowning, sharks, and other ocean danger. And whenever they hear a ship they ride on the waves.

Fun Facts 1). A Dolphins flipper bone looks a lot like a hand bone. This means they could’ve use to live on land. 2). Dolphins are not there own species. They’re just toothed whales. They’re though as there own species just because there tons of different dolphins. 3). Some dolphins can dive 1000 feet! That is 400 more feet then the depth of the Sunlit layer. 4). The Spinner Dolphin can leap 17 feet into the air, do a somersault, and land flat on their backs.

Predators A dolphins main predator is a shark. They mostly hunt calves. But Tiger Sharks are like asteroids of the ocean! They could eat Bulls, Cows and Calves! Dolphins also hunt dolphins. The main dolphin hunter dolphin is the Killer Whale. Again, they usually only eat calves. People also accidently catch dolphin in nets while catching fish. A Better Way to not kill dolphins is to use rods, not nets. Because nets catch multiple fish at a time, and they are large they can catch dolphins, there more dangerous than rods.

Dolphin Life A Dolphin’s life is complicated. It needs to come up for water every few minutes, it can only half sleep because they need to look or for ocean danger. Dolphins use echolocation to communicate, find there way around and find prey. Dolphins also communicate by using, clicks, whistles, squeaks and body language.

Groups and Species Dolphins are Cetacean mammals. That means that there related to whales and porpoises. They’re mammals, so they need to breath air every few minutes. They’re also NOT fish. When they’re hunting in a group its called a Pod. Killer Whales are also dolphins, NOT whales. Also, female dolphins are called cows, males are bulls, and babies are calves.

End-troduction This book taught you All About Dolphins. Dolphin Life, Food and More! I Do Hope you Enjoyed this book. We hope it inspired you to right your own book.
