T HE COLORS WE SEE

M IXING COLORED LIGHT We know that when red, green, and blue spotlights are "mixed" together, they produce white light.

M IXING PAINTS OR PIGMENTS You also know that mixing red, green, and blue paint together does not produce white -- it produces a murky grey or muddy brown.

W HEN WHITE LIGHT SHINES ON AN OBJECT : If white light shines on a white object, all the light is reflected.

P IGMENTS ABSORB CERTAIN COLORS OF LIGHT Materials contain atoms which are capable of absorbing one or more frequencies of light. If white light shines on an object containing certain pigments to produce red color it will reflect red light.
