Studiebarometeret - The National Student Survey 2015/2016 A national survey of students’ perception of educational quality

The Student Survey A national survey asking students about their satisfaction with the programme they are following The survey is sent to 2nd and 5th year students at about 1700 study programmes. Results are published at studiebarometeret.no. NOKUT conducts this survey on behalf of the Norwegian Ministry of Education and Research | 2

The survey covers the following aspects: The learning environment Occupational life relevance Teaching and academic guidance Exams and assessment Learning outcome Students’ work effort Student participation/involvement Practice training | 3

How the students answer the survey A personal link to the survey is mailed to 2nd and 5th year students on 13. October. After a few days students who have failed to answer will receive an SMS reminder with a personal link to the survey. Students may also answer via a general link on learning platforms like Fronter and It’s learning, on Facebook and other relevant websites | 4

Why a student survey? Makes the students’ voice clearly heard in the work to improve educational quality! Offers important information for HEIs concerning their students’ perception of the quality of educational services. Enables the comparison of any programme with equivalent programmes at other Norwegian HEIs | 5

The student survey as a tool Use it as a tool in your own work with educational strategy and quality! The institutions receive: o Raw data (from NOKUT) o Data distributed on institutions and programme types (from NOKUT) o Reports per programme (New service by Easyresearch) o Studiebarometeret.no – now with even more detailed info The student survey may supplement the institution’s own information channels o Basis for explorations in depth (quantitative or qualitative analyses) | 6

Studiebarometeret.no – new this year: Time series More detailed display of data o Number of responses; distribution of responses; standard deviations Combined figures for two years (two surveys) o Programmes with few responses in 2014 o Only last two years (as fresh data as possible) o Combinationed figures will be shown in the portal Versions in both official forms of Norwegian Questions on occupational practice training, if relevant | 7

Response rate is important! 2014: 42 per cent 2015: ? NOKUT needs assistance from the institutions: Take common ownership in the survey throughout the institution. Set internal response rate targets. The institutions may monitor their response rate online | 8

Helpful hints to boost the response rate Inform all teaching staff and responsible leaders at all relevant study programmes. Inform the students about the survey in teaching lessons! Disseminate information through internal information channels and billboards. Use NOKUT’s posters and leaflets. Close cooperation with student representatives and staff about information dissemination will contribute to a higher response rate! | 9

Use information materials from NOKUT | 10
