Reporting and new ideas for 2015 All our publications, theses, reports and presentations are available on our website: http://www3.imperial.ac.uk/earthscienceandengineering/research/perm/porescalemodelling Application of reservoir-condition pore-space imaging to measure contact angle, curvature and reaction. Emphasis on reactive transport imaging and modelling: pore-by-pore comparison of experiment and simulation. Combining direct simulation methods into upscaled generalized network models. Billion plus cell simulation now routine.

Personnel and projects Current group: Martin Blunt, Professor of Petroleum Engineering – overall supervision and fundamental studies of three-phase flow. Branko Bijeljic, Senior Research Fellow – dispersion and reactive transport in porous media. Ali Raeini – Post-doctoral researcher – multiphase flow on pore-space images.  Bagus Muljadi – Post-doctoral researcher – non-Darcy flows and upscaling.  Lewis Lin – Post-doctoral researcher – pore-scale imaging of water invasion.  Zaki Al-Hashmi – 4th year PhD student – reactive transport.  João Paulo Nunes – 3rd year PhD student – reactive transport and multiphase flow. Tarik Saif – 3rd year PhD student – studies of oil shale. Yousef Al-Khulaifi – 2nd year PhD student – pore-scale imaging of reactive transport. Hassan Nourdeen – 2nd year PhD student – upscaling relative permeability. Ahmed Alratrout – 2nd year PhD student – measurement and modelling of contact angle. Mosayeb Shams – 1st year PhD student – direct multiphase simulation. Thomas de Oliveira – 1st year PhD student – reactive transport modelling. Amer Alhammadi – 1st year PhD student – in situ imaging of contact angle. Plus interaction with the Qatar programme (Kamal Singh, Hannah Menke, Yousef Al-Khalaifi, Ying Gao etc).

Challenges for 2016 Applications of pore-scale imaging. Can we make this a routine tool for reservoir management? How to use pore-scale information. Validation of a generalized pore-scale modelling and upscaling. View a network model as a generic upscaling tool, using direct simulation or experiment to assign effective properties. Validate against data at different scales. Extensions to more complex reactive transport. How to go beyond particle-based methods, or simple reactions to combine geochemistry and pore-scale transport.

Many thanks
