5 Where are we heading? Major progress in the last year – what we have done Proposed research for next 1 to 2 years Funding Feedback

6 Major progress Pore-scale analysis and network extraction Micro-CT imaging of various samples provided by sponsors (Shell, Total and Saudi Aramco). Work on network extraction and comparison with Statoil results, 3DMA and ANU work (Hu, Anwar and Stefano). First results on coordination number and pore size. Still work in progress.

7 Major progress Prediction and pore-scale physics Analysis of WAG (Sander). Physical interpretation of dispersion (Branko). Prediction of two-phase properties for BG (Sander). Non-Newtonian flow work extended to yield stress fluids (Taha). Analysis of counter-current imbibition in mixed-wet systems (Hassan). Ten papers published in last year.

8 Research plans Continuation of imaging and network extraction. Validation against test datasets. Validation of predictive two- and three-phase flow results and wettability. Study of trapping in two and three-phase flow to develop a general three-phase model. Continuation of other projects. Develop collaboration with sponsors and other groups (Shell, JOGMEC, Saudi Aramco, Total, Statoil, ANU, Stanford).

9 Funding As planned have 8 companies and DTI as sponsors Also 50% funding for a post-doc from EPSRC – to appoint in early 2005. Will work on pore-scale analysis and network extraction in combination with discrete element simulation of sedimentation Continue collaboration with Hiroshi Okabe on multiple-point statistics and lattice Boltzmann simulations (JOGMEC) Support 4 PhD students and 2 post-docs
