Juvenile Corrections Monitor Department of Human Services

The role of the Department of Human Services’ Juvenile Corrections Monitor: 4 To investigate allegations of abuse or neglect in juvenile corrections facilities. 4 Provide training to DOC employees. 4 Review DOC policies relating to juvenile rights. 4 Provide a semi-annual report to: –the Governor; –the Legislature; –the Corrections Commission; –the Secretary of the Department of Human Services; and –the Secretary of the Department of Corrections.

How do I report possible abuse or neglect to the monitor? 4 Make a phone call to: (605) or 1 (800) ask for the DHS Juvenile Corrections Monitor 4 Write a letter to: DHS Juvenile Corrections Monitor Department of Human Services Hillsview Plaza, E. Hwy. 34 C/o 500 E. Capitol Pierre, SD Send an to: 4 Use the lock box at each facility

What Happens if a report of abuse or neglect is made? An evaluation of the report will be made and if appropriate: 4 The people involved will be interviewed. 4 Records will be reviewed. 4 Corrective action will be recommended. 4 A report will be made to the Secretary of the Department of Corrections, the Government Operations & Audit Committee, and to the Governor. If I make a report of abuse or neglect will my identity be disclosed? No, the identity of the person making a referral of abuse or neglect shall be kept confidential.
