AICE.DevelopmentalApproach and AICE.NaturevsNurture

Bellringer Draw a line across the page of your notebook like this: Place the item on the line according to how much you believe it involves “nautre” (genetics) or “nurture” (environment) Intelligence- Hobbies - Patience Attractiveness - Temperament - Morality Athleticism - Religious Beliefs - Willpower

Nature vs. Nurture: An ongoing Debate The degree to which human behaviour is determined by genetics/biology (nature) or learned through interacting with the environment (nurture) EX: IQ scores Turn and talk

Nature Behaviour is caused by innate characteristics : The physiological/biological characteristics we are born with (genes)

Nurture An individual’s behaviour is determined by the environment- the things people teach them, the things they observe, and because of the different situations they are in.

Debate Topic “Are people more a product of nature or of nurture?”

Strengths USEFULNESS: Findings can be very useful to society as a whole

Weaknesses It is not always easy to separate out what is nature and what is nurture. Studying something like genetics can be socially sensitive – “eugenics” Studies might need to go to unethical means to figure out whether something is truly “nature” or “nurture”.

Exit Ticket Think of the “nature” and “nurture” as two extremes of a continuum. Place each approach on the figure below where you think is appropriate and justify your decision. Nature Nurture Cognitive Approach Social Approach Developmental Approach
