 Performance enhancing or recreational?  Have a discussion with your partner about the two different type of drugs above  Why are they different?? Starter…

 Alcohol and tobacco are recreational drugs  Although drinking alcohol and smoking are legal, they are still drugs and can seriously damage your health and ability to do physical activity  Small amounts of alcohol won’t cause much harm, but every cigarette does damage! Recreational drugs…

Have a think about alcohol and smoking… how do you think it can affect your body? Have a think…

B – BETA BLOCKERS A – ANABOLIC AGENTS D – DIURETICS S – STIMULANTS Na – NARCOTIC ANALGESICS P – PEPTIDE HORMONES Remember…

 Drugs that control heart rate  Lower heart rate, steady shaking hands and have a calming effect Beta Blockers… BUT… They can cause low blood pressure, cramp and heart failure

 Mimic testosterone  Increases bone and muscle growth  Makes you more aggressive Anabolic steroids… BUT… Cause high blood pressure, heart disease, infertility and cancer Women may grow facial/body hair and their voice may deepen

 Increase the amount you urinate, causing weight loss  Can mask traces of other drugs in the body Diuretics… BUT… Can cause cramp and dehydration

 Affect the central nervous system  Increase mental and physical alertness Stimulants… BUT… Lead to high blood pressure, heart/liver problems and strokes They are addictive

 Kill pain – so that injuries and fatigue don’t affect performance so much Narcotic analgesics… BUT… They are addictive, with unpleasant withdrawal symptoms Can make an athlete train too hard Lead to constipation and low blood presure

 Cause the production of other hormones – most have a similar effect to anabolic steriods  EPO (erythropoietin) is a peptide hormone that causes red blood cells to multiply which increases aerobic capacity Peptide hormones… BUT… They can cause strokes and abnormal growth

Research a sportsperson that has been found guilty of using performance enhancing drugs and write up a brief analysis of who they are and what happened as a result of this Research task…
