Globalization

What is globalization? Quickly write down what globalization means to you?

Globalization is a term used to describe the increased economic and cultural trade across international borders. The way goods are produced, the delivery, the sale, and the movement. It is the interaction between countries, without globalization, our world would never change. Definition

A big part of globalization is TNC’s (Trans National Corporations) they are companies that operate in more then one country, they are often very large brands. Nike, Nestle, Loreal Paris, Coca Cola, Pepsi, McDonalds, Sony

This definition looks at two basic types of trade. Economic Trade Culture

1.Economic Trade Globalization here refers to the increased amount of trade across international borders. With the advancement of technology, trade between countries can take place quickly and efficiently. Many of the items we use on a daily basis are made outside of Canada. The fact that it is easier and cheaper for us to import items rather than make them is as a result of globalization.

Globalization also has an impact on culture. Cultural trade refers to the exchanging of ideas through media. Fashion/ Italy/ china Human rights: other countries want freedom Globalization has made it possible for us to experience many different cultures through music, drama, cuisine, etc. As a result, we have a wider cultural experience without leaving our country. China town in Toronto

Often you will hear the phrase that “it’s a small world.” Globalization is also used to describe a set of beliefs that promotes such a sense of connectedness. People in other counties are just like me! Similar hopes and dreams. Often you will hear the phrase that “it’s a small world.” We are able to get to know people from around the world. Closer/ Iphone can call people and see them face to face We have developed a sense of connectedness with people from different countries, ethnic groups, businesses, and so on.

Features of Globalization 1.One of the main features of globalization has been the growth of multinational companies. These are companies that have branches, subsidiaries, and plants in many countries. As a result these companies have greater flexibility and access to resources than companies that operate in only one country.

2. Another feature of globalization is the reduction and/or elimination of trade barriers between countries and regions. Agreements such as NAFTA (North American Free Trade Agreement) try to reduce the barriers for trade between Canada, United States and Mexico.

3. Globalization has also helped spread ideas, scientific advances and new technologies throughout the world. Medical advancement is based on the sharing of ideas and techniques from around the world. The spread of diseases from one country to the next can be reduced as information is shared quickly.

What are the advantages? In small groups come up with as many advantages as you can? Write on board.

Advantages of Globalization Globalization can be seen as a positive step towards reducing poverty. Give people jobs (little pay) As world markets increase, more and more people should be able to find work and make money. Since the resources can be managed more efficiently, the cost of goods and services should also decrease. Less cost to produce it so less amount the consumer has to pay Globalization can also be seen as a way to promote peace by reducing the tensions between governments.

Continued… Companies make huge profit Better communication Products can be traded worldwide Fashion and clothing easier to have Tv programs from other countries

What are the disadvantages? In small groups come up with as many disadvantages as you can. Write on board.

Disadvantages of Globalization Globalization has the potential for powerful nations to take advantage of weaker ones. United states and India This would give more power to corporations and less power to the workers. As a result, the owners of the corporations get wealthier and more powerful, while the workers are not able to raise their standard of living. Globalization can also help spread ideas and goods that are dangerous. In the same way that medical advancements can be shared, terrorist information can be shared just as quickly. Military weaponry and technology can be moved from one country to the next just as easily and quickly as items we use in our homes.
