1 Activator Where are your shoes made? Why? Americans are increasingly annoyed about the price of what commodity? Why?

2 Industrial Revolution Industrial Revolution- 18th and 19th century movement in which people began producing goods by using machines. Led to urbanization- moving to the cities, child labor, and immigration.

3 Globalization Global Economy- All financial interactions between people, businesses, and governments that cross borders. Companies that operate in multiple countries are known as multinational companies. (Car,Gas, clothes)

5 What do we call the movement in which people began producing goods by machines? Why do some multinational companies have their products manufactured in 3 rd world countries? What is urbanization?

6 Expanding Free Trade Since 1995, the World Trade Organization (WTO) ensured that trade is fair between nations. NAFTA- No tariffs (taxes) between Canada, U.S., and Mexico. Europe has a similar agreement (E.U.)

7 Political Problems Demand for resources causes political problems. The main source of energy for nations is oil. Countries’ economies are dependent on oil so prices and supply can cause tension.

11 Environmental Problems Burning of oil and coal has caused the erosion of the ozone. Economic development has also caused the endangerment and extinction of many plants and animals.

12 Sustainable Growth Scientists and economists are working toward sustainable growth- econ growth without destroying the planet. Very difficult to get a worldwide agreement.

13 What causes damage to the ozone and can lead to global warming? Economic growth that does not harm the environment is known as what? Why is it difficult to achieve sustainable growth?
