Chapter 14, Volume 1, XIV Wuthering Heights

Quick summary Isabella requested to see Nelly so he goes to see her. Heathcliff was determined to see Catherine. Nelly reluctantly agrees to act as an intermediary (someone who’s acting between people/parties). Time switches to the present. The doctor calls on Lockwood, Lockwood reflects on the fact that he must be cautious of falling in love with the present Catherine. Only for fear that she should resemble the first.

Do you think that Edgar’s explanation of refusal to write to Isabella is convincing? "I am not angry, but sorry to have lost her: especially as I can never think she'll be happy. It is out of the question my going to see her, however; we are eternally divided."

I think that Edgar’s explanation of refusal to write to Isabella is unconvincing… Shows no emotion, feeling or care towards Isabella. Thinks himself big by saying she will no longer be happy, as if to say she was happy with him and now she is not he will no longer be happy. He is upset but won’t show it, by saying it is out of his questions, makes him think he has no right to go and see her even if he did want to. He won’t find excuses not to see her, just genuinely refuses, doesn’t deny wanting to see her. Believes that it’s the end for them, eternally divided shows that they will be separated forever. Doesn’t seem to want to do anything about it, won’t show to others that he cares. And here’s why…

Some more analysis… He’s angry because he hates Heathcliff, but it’s more jealousy than anything else. Heathcliff recons that Edgar’s ‘love’ is selfish and that Edgar thinks he owns his wife. (Linked to The mayor of Casterbridge, Michael Henchard sells his wife as if she’s an object and he is the owner.)
