 The Shadow: The Jungian Shadow is composed of the dark and unknown aspects of personality. To the personal unconscious, the shadow is made up of the desires, feelings, etc. which are generally unacceptable, in most cases for emotional or moral reasons.  The Animus (Inner Feminine) and Anima (Inner Masculine): Jung’s concept of the Animus and Anima consists of the idea that each individual possesses both masculine and feminine components of the psyche, and that a balance of these components leads to a balanced mind.  The Syzygy: Represents wholeness and completion, as in the combination of the Animus and Anima. This can bring great power (creative or destructive), and is usually observed as the perfect partnership (soul mates) between man and woman.

 Heathcliff: The male “hero” of Wuthering Heights, but he is often also considered the villain. His only redeeming qualities are his passion (though it can also be seen as a degrading quality in Heathcliff) and his love for Catherine and the fact that he saves Hareton.  Catherine: The female “heroine” of Wuthering Heights. She has both degrading and redeeming qualities. Her degrading qualities include her pride and selfishness, as well as her decision to marry Edgar. Her redeeming qualities are her passion and love for Heathcliff, as well her stubbornness and steadfastness.

 Heathcliff (The Shadow/The Anima): Heathcliff himself personifies The Shadow, as his entire personality is generally viewed as unacceptable by those around him: his love for Catherine is frowned upon because of his lower social status; his vengeful tendencies are observed as malevolent and caustic; his very aura and personality is dark, twisted, and scarred.

 Heathcliff (The Shadow/The Anima) (continued): Heathcliff is the male component of the “syzygy”, or his and Catherine’s passionate love for each other. He is focused, action-oriented, and directed, but he also contains several Animus traits, such as dark, vague, intuitive, and receptive.

 Catherine (The Animus): Catherine is the female component of the “syzygy” between her and Heathcliff. She has several traits of the Animus, those being: diffuse, vague, intuitive, and receptive; however, she also envelops some Anima traits, such as: light, directed, focused, and action-oriented.
