Preparing for Common Exams

Have a Plan !  List all of the Common Exam Dates on your Calendar during the First Week of School!  Begin Preparation on the First Day of School!  Make a Commitment to Yourself to Attend Every Class!  Meet the Professor and Memorize his/her Office Hours!

How Much Time Will I Need?

Answer the following questions:  What is my schedule like during the week of the exam?  Do I have other exams or papers due that week?  How much material is there to cover?  Do I need to work with a tutor to better understand the material?

GET TO WORK!  Make and keep a study schedule.  Study in a suitable place free from distractions.  Organize all of your material before starting.

DON’T WAIT FOR INSPIRATION TO STRIKE… IT PROBABLY WON’T! DAILY PREPARATION IS KEY!

STAY OFF FACEBOOK!!

BEFORE AND AFTER CLASS  Every day before class, preview the material for minutes  Spend minutes after class going over notes  Use this time to get any confusing points cleared up; much better now than later  Once a week, review the material to get a complete overview of the information

ESCAPE TO THE CAPE Kupfrian 200

FREE TUTORING STARTS THE FIRST WEEK OF CLASS Attend group tutoring sessions Drop in and work with a tutor No appointment needed Schedule a one-on-one session with a tutor Don’t wait until the last minute!!

PRACTICE! PRACTICE! PRACTICE!  Practice does not make perfect…perfect practice makes perfect!  Work with students who know the material and solve the problems correctly  Attend review sessions

CRAMMING DOES NOT WORK!  Your anxiety level increases  You will lose sleep and eat poorly  You may get sick  You may oversleep and miss the exam

CRAMMING DOES NOT WORK!  Your short term memory will overload and you will forget what you learned  When tired and hungry, you will not perform at a maximum level

The Professor  Pay attention to hints the instructor may give about the test  Ask the teacher to specify areas which will be emphasized on the test  Ask! Ask! Ask!

TEACH ANOTHER STUDENT  If you can teach the material to another student, then you really know it.  Have tutors and classmates ask you to explain the subject.

YOU CAN DO IT!! HAVE CONFIDENCE IN YOUR ABILITY
