By increasing the slip prices far above reasonable rates, Los Angeles County and the lessees have been denying public access in violation of the Coastal Act since early 2007.

2007 – Boaters Upset Over 50-60% Slip Fee Increases Why were people forced out of boating?

August 2007 – Public Hearings Begin on Abnormal Slip Fee Increases in Marina del Rey After 3 months of testimony from numerous boaters, the County Harbor Commission finds that “the developers were stupid” to adjust the rates suddenly by 50% but that the fees were “within reason” in Marina del Rey.

In May 2008, the Coastal Commission is asked to intervene and provide some help with the newly adjusted slip fees.

With no relief on the slip fees from LA County or the Coastal Commission, the slip vacancy rates started spiraling out of control.

LA County Commissioner Speaks Out On What is Happening in Marina del Rey

Marina del Rey, constructed for recreational boating for the citizens of Los Angeles, just a little over a decade ago was home to 6,000 boats. The boating resources have been decimated to its current state of 4,600 slips.

759 slip vacancies in MdR is nearly 10x the rate of the nearest harbors in Los Angeles County and these adjacent harbors are not going through the regulatory process.
