Eirene and Ploutos

And Ploutos Meet Eirene This statue was erected in the Agora of Athens after the peace agreement between Athens and Sparta It is possible that the statue symbolises the idea that through peace with Sparta wealth will return. Eirene, the goddess of peace, is holding the baby Ploutos, god of wealth. Made by Kephisodotos in early 4th century BC (possibly 375BC)

Face looking away from the front. No longer a single character in the statue. Original may have been bronze. Hair not at all repetitive. Leg partially showing. Contrapposta position (left hip is pushed out to support Ploutos and legs are slightly bent) ‘Thin, transparent clothing animated by means of curvilinear patterns has been replaced by simple, heavy, enveloping drapery that falls in straight natural folds’ p152

Woodford says: ‘it is not simply an image, but also an idea embodied in sculptural form.’ ‘But there was more to the group than simple naturalism and emotional tenderness, for the baby that Eirene holds on her arm is the infant Ploutos (wealth) and the idea behind the image is that peace is the nurse of wealth’ p152

Woodford says: ‘The relationship between the two is suggested by the way the baby turns towards the goddess and the way she gently inclines her head towards him, ver much the sort of thing we have already seen in the grave of stele of Ampharate. On that stele tenderness was represented as a purely human quality; here it is attributed to a goddess p152
