What inspires people to act courageously? Concept Talk What inspires people to act courageously?

Partner share With your partner discuss the following: How might people show courage? In what situations do people need courage?

Listen: The story “Run, Kate Shelley, Run” tells the true story of a young girl who stops a train before it heads over a collapsed bridge. Listen for the words: terrified, treacherous, bravery and heroine

Let’s get our books 1-5 6-10 11-15 16-20 21-25 26-30 31-35

Anchored Talk Let’s take a look at the pictures on P. 20-21 What are the kids doing? How do you think they feel? What is the girl doing? What word could you use to describe her? How is the man being courageous? Why do you think he is doing this? What inspires people to act courageously?

Amazing Words Terrified: means “very afraid” He felt terrified all alone in the forest at night. Treacherous: means dangerous Mountain climbing can be treacherous.

Amazing Words Bravery: means courage or being brave Mike showed great bravery when he jumped into the river to rescue the swimmer in trouble. Heroine: is a woman admired for her brave deeds and noble acts. Saving the child from the fire made the woman a heroine.

Comprehension While reading notice how a character’s words or actions can give information about their personality and relationships and how the characters will react to conflict. A plot includes a conflict, rising action, a climax and a resolution. How can you identify the rising action?

Brave Melissa Let’s read the first paragraph of “Brave Melissa”. The title of the story tells us that Melissa is brave. I wonder what she does that makes her brave? As I read I learn she is responsible because she walks her dog every day. Later I read that her dog falls through the ice, and Melissa bravely rescues him.

Monitor and Clarify Finish reading the story. At the end of paragraph 2, I ask myself, What happened? I don’t understand how Melissa’s dog ended up in the water, so I reread the paragraph. Then I understand that after Melissa fell, the dog kept going without her. That’s how he fell through the frozen ice on the lake.
