Sunset Heights Elementary and Liberty High School Enrollment Growth Recommendations Mr. Steve Savoy K-12 Administrator for Academic Services

Purpose Various projections and modeling of housing developments show increasing numbers over the next several years which will have a direct impact on schools in the northern sector. Steps are being taken to ensure that an optimal learning environment is maintained. Sunset Heights enrollment has consistently been over 1,000 since the start of the year and Liberty High School is quickly reaching it’s maximum number of seats.

Background In the fall of 2012 K-12 Administration and Research and Planning provided Board members with the annual update of enrollment status and projections. Resulting in a Board committee being formed to study the school boundaries of the northern sector of PUSD to make recommendations for boundary realignment to meet student growth. During the end of the fall semester 2012 and early spring of 2013 the committee reviewed numerous models for consideration. February 2013 the committee recommended to the Board a plan that affected the boundaries of nine schools and initiated construction of the new elementary school Sunset Heights.

What Does this Mean? The magic number for capacity at Liberty is 2340 students. According to projected enrollment next year (2248), we have room for 92 students. These students can be new students in our boundaries or open enrollment students.

Proposal For 2016/2017 Continue to monitor enrollment Cap the enrollment capacity at 2340 Limit the initial number of new open enrollments to 100 Review enrollment on June 1 st for additional capacity Reconvene this committee in October 2016 to review enrollment data and projections for future years
