Self-assessment Self-assessment is about the individual student’s learning, motivation and metacognitive awareness. It can’t and shouldn’t replace normal teacher assessment.

Considerations It takes time to learn to reflect on own learning in relation to target criteria. Formal tests experiences can hinder - students think assessment is for the teacher/school or parents. They fear assessment from summative tests which in turn hinders learning. Should be little or no teacher judgement during the process – even positive critique can reinforce students’ dependence on teachers’ opinions and extrinsic values. (Peer evaluation an alternative of group presentation).
