All about earthquakes By: Kathleen Marie Horan

Where do earthquakes occur? “On earth there is an earthquake zone. The earthquake zone is where they most commonly happen. A big chunk of it is in South America.”

Earthquakes happen in the earthquake zone. That can be in water or land. There is a map of what is called an earthquake zone that shows you where they happen and how extreme they are.

Earthquake’s Location

They mostly happen in south America and other places. They can happen everywhere on earth. There is an earthquake zone that shows where they mostly occur. They happen on the Fault line.

How often do earthquakes occur? Earthquakes can occur thousands of time a year.

How do you measure an earthquake? The seismic wave is how you measure an earthquake.

Earthquakes happen in the water and land. It rumbles and shakes areas of the earth. When the 2 plates slide it causes an earthquake. Sometimes it only shakes for a couple hours and sometimes a couple minutes. It shakes hard and sometimes lightly.

Destruction caused by earthquake. The huge rumbling of shaking and moving can cause huge damage to schools, hospitals, buildings, and homes.

Earthquake term box! Earthquake term box! Aftershock - the ground shakes a little after the big main shake. Focus -underground starting place of an earthquake Crust- the outer layer of the earth.. Foreshock -ground shaking that can occur before the actually main shake. Fault creep- slow, continuous movement of the 2 plates Magnitude - the power of the earthquake Mantle - thick, dark dense rock the lies beneath the earths crust. Richter scale- scale developed by American seismic wave. Founded by Charles Richter. Goes from 1-10.

-Other Facts- Earthquakes can cause floods. There are big ones and there are smaller ones. They can cause Tsunamis. Earthquakes are very powerful. The mantle is 1,800 miles. The earths core is 2,150 miles. The planet is mostly made out of rock. The planets crust is 5 to 30 miles thick.

-)-(MORE FACTS)-(- * USUALLY MOST EARTHQUAKES TAKE PLACE IN THE EARTHS CRUST. * A 5 TO 30 MILE DEEP LAYER OF ROCK COVERS THE WORLD. * THE CRACKS IN THE ROCKS THAT ARE CALLED FAULTS RUN THROUGH THE CRUST. ”ONE TYPE OF FAULT, CALLED THE SLIP FAULT, THE ROCKS ON ONE OF THE FAULT TRY TO MOVE PAST THE ROCKS ON THE OTHER SIDE, CAUSING TO BUILD UP.” Richter scale goes from 1 to 10

Thank you for watching my PowerPoint!!! Hope you enjoyed!!! I worked very hard. It is very cool to learn about earthquakes. Hope you learned a lot. REMEMBER TO BE SAFE IN AN EARTHQUAKE AND MAKE SURE YOUR FAMILY MEMBERS ARE SAFE TOO.
