What are Food Chains and Food Webs?

Food Chains Living things need one another to survive. A food chain shows the order in which animals eat plants and other animals.

Food chains start with sunlight and plants. In this food chain, first, the grass uses sunlight to make its food. Second, a grasshopper eats the grass. Third, a mouse eats the grasshopper. Fourth, a snake eats the mouse. Last, a hawk eats the snake.

Food Chains

Food Webs Most animals eat more than one kind of food. So an animal may be part of more than one food chain. Connected food chains are called a food web.
