General Information Used to magnify thin specimens Light must be able to pass through the object Knowing the basic parts will help you better use this tool

Part A Part you look through Ocular lens has 10x magnification

Part B –Part B 1 = Nosepiece Rotates objective lenses Scanning objective lens = 4 x –When you are viewing a specimen you will ALWAYS start here then move on to low power. Low Power = 10 x High Power = 40 x B1B1 Add this part to your notes

Calculating Total Power If eyepiece has a power of 10x and… Objective lens has a power of 4x, the total is… Low Power: 10 x 10 = 100 x High Power: 10 x 40 = 400 x

Part C Specimen is placed on the stage Specimen held in place by stage clips – part C 1 C1C1

Part D When carrying, one hand goes on the arm

Part E Large focus knob Makes large adjustments – moves stage up and down Find every object using the course focus knob first

Part F Smaller focus knob Once you found the specimen using the course focus… Use the fine focus to make small adjustments

Part G Controls the amount of light that enters a microscope If too dim, open the diaphragm If too bright, close the diaphragm

Part H Light source Microscope will not work unless lamp is turned on

Part J When carrying one hand is on the arm and… The other is under the base

Part I Power cord must be plugged in When finished, neatly wrap the cord around the microscope
