OCEANIC POLLUTION-PLASTICS

“Nearly 80% of ocean trash starts on land…

…and is then swept into the ocean…

…via waterways and storm drains” (Farris and Hart, 1995 ).

Some comes back to the land…

…but most gets trapped…

…in the middle of the sea…

…where it causes…

. great ecological harm.

Winds caused by changes in atmospheric pressure.

Winds affect surface currents of oceans.

Water piles up

And creates a Gyre.

Ocean Gyres

Northern Pacific Garbage Patch

What are the benefits of plastics? Make a list w/ partner!

The Many Benefits of Plastics Durable & Strong Resistant to corrosion Lightweight Cheap Flexible Inert Easy to mold Easy to manufacture Easy to manipulate Promotes cleanliness

Made of Synthetic Polymers from Oil

Plastic Additives…lots of Chemicals! Fillers Reinforcements Pigments Heat Stabilizers UV Stabilizers Flame Retardants Antistatic Additives Conductive Additives Biocides Curing Agents Plasticizers

Plastics Can Photodegrade

Hydrophobic

Plastic Pellets

1) Plastic Trash is Ugly

2) Plastic Trash Entangles Marine Life

3) Plastic Trash is Mistaken for Food

4) Plastic Trash is a Base for Invasive Species Dispersal

5) Plastic Trash Collects Toxins from the Sea and Give Off Toxins to the Sea

6) Some Plastic Sinks to the Ocean Floor  Destroys Habitat

7) Plastic Trash Endangers Nursery Habitats

8) Plastic Trash Entangles Marine Equipment
