Factors that Influence Alcohol Use O Peer pressure: Teens want to fit in with those around them! O Family: Can help teens be alcohol free. Family disapproval is the number one reason teens give for not drinking. O Media: Make alcohol seem glamorous and fun. O What kind of commercials do we see?

Advertising Techniques O Spend billions to associate their products with youthful, healthy people who seem to be having fun. O Sponsor sporting events. O Never show consumers the negative side of alcohol use.

Advertising O Alcohol Ads usually portray: O Young people who are handsome, attractive, fit, and healthy looking. O A “party like” atmosphere with upbeat music. O An otherwise healthful environment, often outdoors. O Problem free drinking. O A verbal message that does not say anything about the RISKS of using the product.

Health Risks of Alcohol Use O Nearly 50 people die each day from alcohol related traffic collisions. O Drowning, fire, suicide, and homicide are risks from alcohol use.

Alcohol and the Law O Under 21 it is illegal to buy, possess or consume alcohol! O You can be arrested, fined, or thrown in a detention facility. O Any arrest and conviction can affect a teen’s future. O Limit college and employment options.

Alcohol, Violence, and Sexual Activity O Teens are more likely victims in crimes such as rape, assault, and robbery. O Alcohol and sex do not mix. Lack in judgment, lower inhibitions, and compromise of moral standards happen when alcohol is involved! O 25% use alcohol or drugs before engaging in sexual activity. O Teens who use alcohol are more likely to participate in premarital sex and twice as likely to contract an STD.

Alcohol and the Family O Estimated that 25% of all teens are exposed to alcohol abuse. This is excessive use of alcohol. O Teens who drink are 4 times more likely to become an alcoholic. O Seek out alcohol as an escape from their problems. Alcohol and School O Most schools have a zero tolerance policy for students caught using alcohol. O Can become ineligible or suspended from extra curricular activities.

Benefits of Living Alcohol Free O Healthy Body: Avoid damage to the brain and body O Relationships: Open and honest with family and friends. O Decisions: Make clear choices.
