FRESH FRUIT & VEGETABLE PROGRAM Lindsay Gaucher KSC Dietetic Intern 2013 Independent Study

A little background…  In 2012, Barrett Hill Farm began an on-site fruit & vegetable delivery program with 2 local companies – Flir & Parker.  The 2012 program had:  Limited employee participation  Employees who expressed lack of time & knowledge to prepare meals and that too much produce was received

PROJECT GOALS The objectives of this Independent Study project:  Collect information from the Flir and Parker employees to assess factors related to program participation  Incorporate creative ways to enhance the original fresh fruit and veggie program  Review Flir and Parker employee response data to better meet the needs of the employees for the 2013 program Images retrieved from:

SOME FAST FACTS FLIR  44 participant surveys received  Ages years old  Respondents were: 75% female/25% male  80% do the shopping  89% spend $10 or more on produce  67% do the cooking  53% eat at home 3-5 days/week  53% participated in the program last year  83% WILL participate this year PARKER  56 participant surveys received  Ages years old  Respondents were: 40% female/60% male  71% do the shopping  71% spend $10 or more on produce  58% do the cooking  51% eat at home more than 5 days/wk  46% participated in the program last year  80% WILL participate this year

What Fruits & Veggies Do You Like?

Where Do You Do Your Grocery Shopping?

How Would You Rate Their Cooking Skills?

What is the Biggest Challenge When it Comes to Preparing a Healthy Meal?

FLIR – 83% say YES!  I enjoyed getting the fresh, good quality produce!  Convenient and timely way to get more fruits and veggies, BUT can we choose what comes in the bag??  Price will be a factor  It will depend on the size of the bag as some of the bags had too much produce, so there was a lot of waste  I’d like to try something new!  As a family, we want to try to eat healthier PARKER – 80% say YES!  Would like to learn and try new recipes for myself & my family  Quality and freshness can’t be beat  The quantity is just too much for just two of us  Pricing and variety are a factor to contribute to my decision making and purchasing this year  Prefer non pre-packaged bag  I like fresh food!!  I would like to cook with new produce items rather than the typical ones I buy at the supermarket DO YOU THINK YOU WILL PARTICIPATE IN THE PROGRAM THIS YEAR…WHY OR WHY NOT?

Employees at Flir and Parker can:  Purchase seasonal, local, farm fresh produce at a decent price  Visit Barrett Hill Farm, and participate in farm events & activities  Try new fruits & vegetables to incorporate into the everyday diet  Learn recipes and cooking techniques that are quick, easy, and healthy 2013 Program Participation Image retrieved from:

Conclusion & Recommendations  Communication & collaboration with Flir & Parker will positively impact Barrett Hill Farm & the employee participants  Active commitment by Barrett Hill Farm to target and tailor employee needs will enhance this year’s program  Ongoing evaluation to assess the program’s needs will continue to motivate present and future employee participation

THANK YOU!
