“These words the LORD spoke to all your assembly, in the mountain from the midst of the fire, the cloud, and the thick darkness, with a loud voice; and He added no more. And He wrote them on two tablets of stone and gave them to me.” Deuteronomy 5:22

If God has added “no more” to His word, neither should we! Those who lived under the Old Testament had no right to add to it! (Deuteronomy 4:1-2; Proverbs 30:5-6) –God would not even add to His Law to make His own Son a priest (Hebrews 8:4; 7:12-14) The same principle applies to those of us who live under the New Testament – we must not add to God’s word! (1 Corinthians 4:6; 2 John 9; Rev. 22:18-19)

Nothing Should be Added to the Work of the Church Evangelism is a work of the church (1 Thessalonians 1:8) According to God’s word, local churches may spread the Word through several means: –They may send out evangelists (Acts 11:20-24; 13:3; 14:26) –They may support evangelists financially (1 Cor. 9:14; 2 Corinthians 11:8; Philippians 4:15-16). –They may invite unbelievers into their worship assemblies (1 Corinthians 14:24) Sponsoring church arrangements and benevolence- as-evangelism schemes are additions to God’s word!

Nothing Should be Added to the Work of the Church Edification is a work of the church 1 Corinthians 14:26, “Let all things be done for edification.” –Singing, praying, partaking of the Lord’s supper and preaching God are God-given means of accomplishing edification in the church (1 Corinthians 14:15; 11:18-34; Acts 20:7, 32). –Pot-luck suppers, Christmas parties, pageants, and basketball games are additions to God’s word.

Nothing Should be Added to the Work of the Church Helping needy saints is a work of the church God expects individual Christians to help those in need (James 1:27; Galatians 6:10; Ephesians 4:28, etc.). However, God chose not to burden the church with helping every needy person (cf. 1 Timothy 5:16) Churches are to help needy saints (Acts 4:33-35; 6:1; 11:26-30; Romans 15:25-26; 2 Corinthians 8:4; 9:1, 12;)

Nothing Should be Added to the Worship of the Church Lord’s Supper (Acts 20:7, 1 Corinthians 11:20ff) Giving (1 Corinthians 16:1-2) Preaching (Acts 20:7) Praying (Acts 12:5) Singing (Ephesians 5:19)
