GRADE 9 HUMANITIES ECONOMIC GEOGRAPHY

ECONOMIC ACTIVITIES  There are 4 types: 1.Primary – Activities that use natural resources eg: fishing, mining, farming… 2. Secondary – Activities that use primary resources to produce or manufacture something eg: steelmaking, lumber yards turn wood into plywood, dairies turn milk into cheese…

ECONOMIC ACTIVIES CONTINUED 3. Tertiary – Activities that provide services eg: Doctors, teachers, waiters, drivers, maids… 4. Quaternary – Activities that process and distribute information. People with specialized skills and knowledge eg: research scientists, computer programmers

ECONOMIC SYSTEMS  There are 3 types of economies: 1. Traditional – People make goods for themselves, little surplus and few markets. Found in poorer (rural) countries. 2. Market – people choose what to buy and sell. Competition determines the price. Capitalism/free enterprise; private ownership. Found in rich countries 3. Command – government decides what to produce, where its made and the price. Communist countries.

ECONOMIC PATTERNS, RESOURCES, AND TECHNOLOGY  Changes in the above have affected the location and patterns of economic activities. (remember the creation and sale of the pencil) eg: refrigerated trucks allow food to be shipped around the world without spoiling; countries can use e- mail to order goods from across the globe. As a result distance is no longer an issue. GLOBALISATION!
