Example #1 Rewrite 8(10 + 4) using the distributive property. Then evaluate. 8(10) + 8(4)Distributive property Multiply 112Add 1. Rewrite 9(5 + 1) using the distributive property. Then evaluate. 2. Rewrite 3(11 – 8) using the distributive property. Then evaluate. 1. = = 9

Simplifying Expressions Like Terms: terms with the same variable and same exponent Combining like terms: combining like terms by adding or subtracting the coefficients (the numbers in front of the variable(s)). 3s + 4t – 5s 3s – 5s = -2s but the 4t is not a ‘like term’ with the others so… The simplified expression is -2s + 4t Only terms with the same variable and exponent can be put together.
