1.7 Simplifying Expressions Essential Questions: 1)What is the distributive property? 2)How do you simplify expressions?

The Distributive Property Multiply the outside value with the quantity in the parentheses. Multiply the outside value with the quantity in the parentheses. Examples: 3(4 + 8) = 3(4) + 3(8) 3(12)= 12 + 24 36 = 36 36 = 36 Algebraically:Algebraically: a(b + c) = ab + ac a(b – c ) = ab – ac a(b – c ) = ab – ac

Simplify using the distributive property. 1) 2) 3)

Practice

Terms: parts of an expression being added or subtracted. Like terms: terms with the same variable to the same power. Coefficient: a number multiplied by a variable. A variable written without a coefficient has a coefficient of 1. Constant: a term with no variable.

Example

Example 2: More Variables To combine like terms, 1)Identify like terms (circle or box them), if any. 2)Add or subtract the like terms Remember Like Terms have same variable, same power!

Practice

Practice

Example 3: Distributive Property To simplify: 1)Do the Distributive Property 2)Identify like terms, if any 3)Add or subtract like terms

Practice Simplify 6(5 + n) – 2n Simplify 6(x – 4) + 9

Summary Answer the essential questions in complete sentences. 1)What is the distributive property? 2)How do you simplify expressions? STUDY QUESTIONS: Write 2-4 study questions in the left column to help study and explain the notes.
