Jennifer B.’s Story  Was anorexic for about two years  Influenced by magazines in high school with ads about losing weight and eating healthy  First started off by not eating red meat, the poultry, then moved to not eating fats and eventually stopped eating altogether  She would ride her bike to work, ride her bike during her whole lunch hour break, then ride it to the gym where she would work out for another two hours  She then would get home and eat a bit of rice and vegetable and return to the gym  She lost 20% of her body weight and stopped having her period because of how unhealthy she was  She would constantly think of food because she was depriving herself of food  To punish herself with hunger, she would carry a banana in her backpack and use that to control herself and not eat  She then admitted to herself that she had a problem and got help  Her mind was delusional and obsessed with food because she kept starving herself

Anorexia Nervosa Eating disorder that involves persistent loss of appetite that endangers an individual’s health Symptoms:  Dieting despite being thin  Obsession with calories, fat grams, and nutrition  Dramatic weight loss  Pretending to eat or lying about eating  Compulsive exercising  Abusing diet pills  Starve themselves  Constant thought of food

Theories  One common misconception is that people are self-absorbed, vain individuals who place too much importance of their looks  One common theory is that people seek control over themselves and their lives and food and weight can be controlled easily

Treatments  In medical treatment the first priority is to address and stabilize any serious health problems  Hospitalization may be necessary is the person is dangerously malnourished or distressed  Another form is nutritional counseling  A nutritionist or dietician will teach the person about healthy eating and proper eating  They will teach and develop a meal plan to get the person to a healthy weight  Another form is counseling  Goal is to identify the negative thoughts and feeling that fuel the eating disorder and replace them with healthier, less distorted beliefs  General treatment of anorexia involves three steps  Getting back to a healthy weight  Starting to eat more food, and  Changing how you think about yourself and food

Facts  Anorexia affects mainly girls and women but can also affect boys and men  Usually starts in the teenage years  High percentage of people struggling with anorexia have a history of abuse, neglect, or other traumatic experiences  Celebrities that have/had anorexia Mary-Kate Olsen Paris Hilton Nicole Richie Brazil model Ana Carolina Reston
