ANIMAL KINGDOM CLASSIFICATION Animals can be grouped into two large categories: Vertebrates and Invertebrates. Vertebrates have backbones and invertebrates.
Organization of the Animal Kingdom. What is an Animal? Active multicellular organism that eats primary producers or other consumers –All animals: Find.
What is an Animal? Eukaryotic (complex cells) Multicellular (made of many cells) Heterotroph (obtain food from outside) swallow and digest inside the body.
INVERTEBRATE COMPARATIVE ANATOMY. Invertebrates make up 95% of the animal world. While there is a lot of variation among invertebrates, all of them lack.

Coelenterata – hollow gut

Ctenophora – comb bearing Comb jellies Radial symmetry, tissue level, rows of cilia

Platyhelminthese – flat worm Tapeworms, planarians, flukes Bilateral symmetry, some parasitic, organ system level

Nematoda – thread like Round worms (hook worms, pin worms) Bilateral symmetry, organ system, mostly parasitic

The Worm Phyla

Mollusca – soft body Squid, snails, clams, octopus Bilateral symmetry, organism, have shells

Mollusca – soft body

Annelida – little rings Earthworms, leeches, marine worms Bilateral symmetry, ventral nerve cord

Arthropoda – jointed foot Insects, crustaceans, arachnids Bilateral symmetry, some can fly, exoskeleton

Arthropoda – jointed foot

Echinodermata – spiny skin Sea stars, sand dollars, sea cucumbers radial symmetry

Echinodermata – spiny skin

Chordata – with a backbone Fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds, mammals bilateral symmetry, some can fly, notochord present at some stage

Chordata – with a backbone
