PROJECT PROPOSAL TITLE: EFFECTS OF LIMING AND MANURE APPLICATION ON ACCUMULATION OF MINERAL NUTRIENTS IN THE ABOVE GROUND PORTION OF SOYBEAN(Glycine max Merryl) BY BASIL ONYANGO OTIENO BSc. AGRICULTURE A22/0016/2009 SUPERVISORS: Dr. Georgr Cheminingwa Dr. Shamie Zingore

BACKGROUND Soybean is one of the oldest crops ever domesticated by man. First domesticated in East Asia 5000 years ago (BIDCO 2005), Soybean contains about 40% protein (Greenberg and Hartung, 1998) About 50 countries in the world grow soybeans Today over 50 countries grow soybean ranging from small to large scale (Boerma and Speclit, 2004)

SOYBEAN PRODUCING AREAS IN KENYA PROVINCE DISTRICT Western Rift Valley Eastern Nyanza Busia, Bungoma, Butere, Teso, Kakamega, Mount Elgon, Lugari and Vihiga Trans Nzoia, Nakuru, Nandi, Koibatek, Narok, Trans Matra, Laikipia, Bomet. Meru, Embu, Machakos Rachuonyo, Homa-Bay, Gucha, Kisii, Nyamira, Siaya

PROBLEM STATEMENT AND JUSTIFICATION Repeated cultivation without replenishing soil fertility season after season, soils are also acidic. This can be manifested by the fact that there have been low production of soybean over the years.

OBJECTIVES To investigate effect of liming and manure application on accumulation of N, P and K in the above ground portion of soybean. To investigate effect of liming and manure application on accumulation of Ca, Mg and Zn in the above ground portion of soybean.

NULL HYPOTHESES Liming and manure application have similar effects on accumulation of N, P and K in the above ground portion of soybean. Liming and manure application have similar effects on the accumulation of Ca, Mg and Zn in the above ground portion of soybean.

MATERIALS AND METHODOLOGY Teatments  T 1 Control  T2. Inoculation alone  T3. N, P, K  T4.PK-(N)  T5.NP- (K)  T6. NK-(P)  T7.N+P+K+S+Ca+Mg+Zn+Mo  T8.N,P,K,S,Ca, Mg, Manure, Lime

Cont….. Sites: two sites(Eshisa and Nyabeda); rainfall of 1947 mm annually distributed in two seasons; acid soils Site preparation: ploughed then partitioned into three block which then will be partitioned into plots 6m x 6 m Planting: at the onset of rains; spacing of 45cm x 5cm i.e. in farrows; one seed per hole Variety: SB-132 (SQUIRE) Experimental design: randomized complete block Husbandry: fertilization and weeding

Cont…. Sample collection and preparation  Sub plots measuring 0.5 m x 0.45 m will be harvested from each main plot by cutting the above ground portion using panga.  The samples will be dried in the oven at 65 o Cfor 24 hours  The dried samples will be crashed then packaged separately

ANALYSIS ANALYSIS Chemical analysis Will be done in soil chemistry laboratory of CAVS using Mg,Ca and Zn will be analyzed by Atomic Absorption Spectrometer at wavelengths of 285.2,nm 422.7nm and 213.9nm respectively; K will be determined by flame photometer; P by photo spectroscopy; N by distillation Samples will be first be digested to obtain extract Statistical data analysis: data will be analyzed by ANOVA using GENSTAT software
