Mammals Science Chapter 2.6 Fourth Grade Lenkerville Elem.

A warm-blooded vertebrate that has hair and feeds milk to its young. Mammal

Traits of Mammals

Traits of Mammals 1 Warm- blooded – An animal whose body temperature stays about the same, even when the outside temperature changes.

Traits of Mammals 2 Vertebrate – Animal with a backbone.

Traits of Mammals 3 Hair or Fur – Helps to keep a mammal warm Mammals are the only animals that have hair or fur.

Traits of Mammals 4 Feeds milk to its young – Mammals are the only animals that feed milk to their young.

Traits of Mammals 5 Female mammals have body parts, called milk glands, that produce milk. The milk is food for the young.

Traits of Mammals 6 Most mammals live on land, but some live in water.

Three Groups of Mammals Egg-Laying Mammals Marsupials Fully Formed

Egg-Laying Mammals

Fully developed young hatch from eggs Duckbilled Platypus

Duckbilled Platypus

Egg-Laying Mammals Spiny Anteater

Marsupials

Begin to form inside mother’s body

Marsupials Very small and not fully formed when born. A baby opossum

Tasmanian Devil Babies

Marsupials After it is born, the baby marsupial crawls into its mother’s pouch, where it feeds on milk, and continues to develop and grow.

A Baby Kangaroo

Marsupials Kangaroo Tasmanian Devil Koala

Fully Formed

Mammals whose young grow inside the mother’s body are fully formed when they are born.

The smaller the mammal, the shorter the time it grows inside the mother. Shrew
