What is Energy? Energy makes the world go round! 

Canada's Energy!

 It may take 50 or 100 wells to discover or make petroleum.  Right there is a Petroleum Oil Well

 List the three main types of energy used in Canada. Define the terms Fossil fuels and hydrocarbon, and give examples. Are fossil fuels renewable or non renewable resources?

 Why is oil industry connected to the problem of greenhouse gas emissions and climate change?

 Question 1 : In what ways is the trade of energy important to the Canadian economy? Canada enjoys a surplus with respect to energy trade. If we don’t use all the energy we produce, why do we have to export it?  Question 2 : (individual, with Priya) ---Given the advantages of nuclear power, do you think Canada should concentrate on this energy source to meet future electricity demands? Explain.

Question 1 Since Canada is one of the largest energy producers, we have plenty of energy to give,. The export of energy brings lots of money to the economy. For example, in 1997 Canadian gross energy exports were valued at CDN $27.9 billion. When we export energy to other contries that need it, in the future they’d probably give us something in return, sort of like an exchange of necessities. It’s like if your walking down the street and you have a supersize bag of chips, and you see a homeless woman with her daughter on the street begging for food, you’d stop and give them some right? Because you have a lot and can spare some for others.

 Well, in our opinion, we SHOULD increase the production of nuclear energy, but NOT focus to much. Yes, it may have advantages BUT the disadvantages are deadly and fatal. SOME of these disadvantages include:  the storage and management of dangerous high level radioactive waste,  the nuclear waste lasts for tens of thousands of years before decaying to safe levels,  the high cost of building nuclear facilities,  and the possibility of accidents. Accidents associated with nuclear energy are fatal and deadly.  There are many more.

The water flows through a penstock, spins a turbine that is connected to a generator producing electricity and transferring it to the power lines. The water then joins the river or waterway once again. Water is heated, turns into steam and spins a steam turbine which drives a generator. After it passes through the turbine, the steam is condensed in a condenser and recycled to where it was heated. AdvantagesDisadvantages 1) The fuel used is quite cheap.1) Large amount of smoke and fumes 2) Less initial cost as compared to other generating plants. 2)Takes up space that could be used for other things 3) It require less space as compared to Hydro power plants. 3) The building of a plant includes drilling feet below the Earths surface

A wind generator´s rotating blades convert the wind´s kinetic energy into a rotational system in the shaft. The rotating shaft turns an alternator, which makes electricity. This electricity is transmitted through wiring down the tower to its end use. Wind power is the conversion of wind energy into a form of energy, such as using wind turbines to make electricity, windmills for mechanical power, wind pumps for water pumping or drainage AdvantagesDisadvantages 1) The wind is free and with modern technology it can be captured efficiently 1) Wind is not constant 2) Does not cause green house gases2) Countryside should be left untouched 3) Only takes a small plot of land3) Wind turbines are noisy/Loud 4) Play role in both the developed and third world countries 4) Unsightly structures 5) Range of sizes5) Manufacturing process causes some pollution is produced 6) Only provide enough electricity for 475 homes (largest)

Concentrated solar power systems use lenses or mirrors and tracking systems to focus a large area of sunlight into a small beam. Photovoltaic's convert light into electric current using the photoelectric effect. AdvantagesDisadvantages 1) Saves you money1) Cost of solar energy is also high compared to non-renewable utility- supplied electricity. 2) Environmentally Friendly2) No solar energy will be produced during nighttime 3) Independent/ Semi-independent3) Slower speed 4) Low to no Maintenance4) influenced by the presence of clouds or pollution in the air. The interaction between three "heavy" elements - two types of uranium and a form of plutonium -- creates a chain reaction that can be harnessed to generate electricity.
