Changes in population structure

During the 1950, following World War II, Canada is the midst of a baby boom (babies born ). Canada’s population grew rapidly because of an increase of immigration and relatively large families (most Canadian families had at least three Children).

Looking at the population pyramid in 1956, there was a high percentage of 0-14 year olds. By 2004 the budge was in the year old range. This had a significant change in Canadian society. In the 1950’s the emphasis was on providing elementary schools, while in 2004 there was little need for new schools, in fact some schools were closing.

This is due to the fact that Canada’s population was growing less than one third as quickly as in By 2004, the baby boomers were thinking about retirement. As this dependency load shifts, Society’s emphasis shift accordingly. Now instead of building new school, Canada needs to provide services for the growing older population.
