Lacey Act of 1900 Stefanie Vidaurri P.5 APES Draft Year: 1900 Amendment Years: 1935, 1947, 1969, 1981, 1988, 1989 National United States of America (only)

It’s Function -This piece of legislation was introduced to by John F. Lacey, and was officially signed into law in 1900 by President McKinley. -It states that it’s unlawful to transport, export, or even sell any fish or plant life of any kind taken from one country to the U.S. -This Act protects the rights of wildlife and ensures that nonnative species are taken from their homeland and brought to other nations. -This document would help restoring game and other birds in the U.S. and established that it’s illegal to submit false identification of wildlife. The Environmental Issues Affected -It is now illegal to hunt without a legal license. -Biodiversity of ecosystems worldwide are now being positively affected by this law. -It’s greatly reduced the illegal harvesting of fish in America, allowing the endangered species to grow and prosper. -Invasive species now are unable to harm the native species of the U.S.; the illegal importation of animals from foreign countries has been reduced.

Agency/Group Responsible for Regulation and Enforcement The U.S. Customs Service ensures the legislation is being properly followed. -They check any sort of baggage and items of travelers before entering the country. -Customs workers also check vehicles. They are randomly inspected; the Mexico border is an example of where this takes place.
