1 Tim Carroll Period 3 Drafted: 1900 Amended: 1969, 1981, and 1988 National law Agency Responsible: Department of the Interior

2  Signed into law by President William McKinley on May 25, 1900 and is a national law  It protects plants and animals and punishes the trade of plants or animals that have been illegally taken from their habitat or sold.  Its purpose is to aid the restoration of animals that are endangered species or extinct in certain regions.  It was put in place as a result of the illegal hunting of endangered and threatened animals in the early 1900’s, jeopardizing their already dropping population.

3  Penalties for an offense of this law include a fine and a suspension of their hunting or fishing license.  Agencies enforcing the Act may detain and inspect vessels and containers upon entry and departure from the U.S., and require the production of documents and permits for transportation  Also prohibits the importing of mammals, birds, fish, amphibians, reptiles and brown tree snakes which the Secretary declares to be dangerous to humans, agriculture, horticulture, forestry or wildlife.
