Division with Decimals

divisor must first be a whole number. This is accomplished by moving the decimal on the divisor all the way to the end. When the decimal on the divisor is moved to the right, that is like multiplying it by a power of 10, therefore the decimal on the dividend must also be moved the same number of times. When dividing decimals by decimals, the divisor must first be a whole number. This is accomplished by moving the decimal on the divisor all the way to the end. When the decimal on the divisor is moved to the right, that is like multiplying it by a power of 10, therefore the decimal on the dividend must also be moved the same number of times.

KiKi, karate monkey, is going to help us move the decimals in both the divisor and dividend to the right positions (KiKi kicked the decimal 1 time to the right.) (Now KiKi must also kick this decimal, 1 time to the right.). This is where the (This is where the Decimal will be placed In the Quotient.) Dividing the numbers then proceeds as normal.

Let’s have KiKi help us move the decimals in this problem too. How many spaces should he kick these decimals? Now lets divide! xx

KiKi hopes you’ve been watching and wants to allow you a chance to earn your own black belt. You try this one: x x xx How did you do? You’ve earned your black belt!

What happens if you move the decimal more times than you have numbers? x (In order to keep dividing, we add a 0 and bring it down.)

Now you try! xx Sharp moves!
