Aim: What laws did the British government begin passing to control the actions of the colonies?  Do Now: What was the triangular trade? Explain and give examples.

Navigation Acts  British Parliament (government body that passes acts or laws)  British passed the Navigation Act between to protect British mercantilism – have more exports than imports in order to make more money  Colonists could only trade with Great Britain  Smugglers broke the law and snuck in goods from other countries

II. Sugar Act  Tax  Lower debt  Colonists’ reaction

Sugar Act  Taxes is money collected by the government  British needed to begin to collect taxes to pay off their debt  Passed the Sugar Act in 1764 and taxed goods such as sugar, wine, coffee, silk, etc.  Colonists were upset over tax and protested – famous quote “no taxation without representation”
