Slaves from West Africa were transported to the West Indies Life was horrible for slaves as they suffered the long journey and forced to work against their will. The reason why so many Africans went to America in the 18 th and 19 th centuries was because they were captured and transported to America and sold as slaves. Slaves were officially set free in1865.

Music played an important part in the Africans lives as in their songs they expressed themselves. Africans used instruments in their music. The most popular instrument was the drums- this was played in a variety of different ways such as using the palm, their fingertips or using sticks. They used many instruments such as: Drums Scrapers Shakers Tambourines Fiddles Off-Beat Rhythm: is something that is odd or does not fit in with music itself.

Blues music expressed all the unhappy things that had or were happening in their lives. The 12 Bar Blues are the most common form of blues.
