2 What are the blue’s songs? The blues is the name given to a style of music created by African- Americans at the end of the 19th century. Blue is a genre that came from African-American background. It all began in the 19 th century when African people were used as slaves. This was terrible for the black people because they had to work hard long days and they were separated from their families. They sang blues music to express how unhappy things were in life aside for that they used blues music to sing lullabies to the young children to make them feel better or go of to sleep.

4 Could it be any worse …… Freedom was worse than slavery because the slaves often went into poverty or they were homeless. How would you feel in that circumstance to be a slave put your shoe in the act of a slave and see how they suffered for us. We should all be thanking them because black people would not have education at this point if it wasn’t for them also other coloured skin people wouldn’t have got along.

5 Famous Blue Artist Bessie smith was a famous female blue singer. She was an American and she was born on the 15 th of April 1894.Most people called her ‘Empress of the blues’ they her this because she was most popular blue singer in the 1920’s and 30’s Robert Johnson was a male singer-songwriter and musician. He was American and he was born on the 8 th of may 1911. most blue singers found Robert inspiring him because he was a passionate singer and brilliant guitarist ever since Bessie smith.

6 Slavery music Strange fruit Southern trees bear a strange fruit Blood on the leaves and blood at the root Black body swinging in the southern breeze Strange fruit hanging from the poplar trees Pastoral scene of the gallant south The bulging eyes and twisted mouth Scent of magnolia sweet and fresh And the sudden smell of burning flesh! Here is a fruit for the crows to pluck, For rain to gather, for rain to suck For the sun to rot, for a tree to drop Here is strange and bitter crop. Analyse In this song/poem it talks about black African Americans being hanged. The phrase ‘black body swinging in the southern breeze’ tells me that black Africans were hanged to death and they were left hanging in the southern breeze.
