Biography S. E. Hinton The Outsiders was published in 1967, when the author was just seventeen. Susan Eloise shortened her name to S. E. Hinton. The book was published to critical acclaim, won several awards, and became a cult classic among teen readers. The success of The Outsiders enabled Hinton to go to the University of Tulsa, where she earned a B.S. in Education in In 1975, she published Rumble Fish, and Tex in Her pivotal role in the development of young adult fiction was recognized in 1988, when the American Library Association awarded her the first Margaret Edwards Young Adult Author Achievement Award for her body of work.

Early Childhood S. E. Hinton was born Susan Eloise Hinton on July 22, 1948, in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

Hinton’s Books The Outsiders, 1967 That was Then, This is Now, 1971 Rumble Fish, 1979 Tex: A Novel, 1980 Taming the Star Runner, 1988 The Puppy Sister, 1995 Hawkes Harbor, 2004 Some of Tim’s Stories, 2006

The setting Our novel was set in the age of establishing global domination, , in the American state of Oklahoma. Period of great change for America Racial segregation became less obvious The most important was the social transformation. The Greasers fought against the Socs, which represented the battle between Imperialism and Communism.

Themes Courage in the face of the stronger Brotherhood in the face of challenges Love between family Loyalty to friends Social segregation between the rich and the poor Chivalry to the helpless

Characterization Ponyboy (courage, loyalty, and chivalry) During the rumble, he courageously jumped on a stronger opponent when he saw that another greaser was in danger He scared away three Socs by himself with a broken bottle He jumped into the church to rescue the kids trapped in the fire.

Plot in relation to the themes The main gang, the greasers, are the outsiders in the little town, as shown by the title, and although they are often picked on by the richer Socs, they stick together and fight against them, finally achieving victory. There is also love between the 3 brothers, as they care for each other dearly. There is also the case of the rich bullying the poor. At that time, discrimination was common among those of the higher class and the lower class. The poor are always getting blamed for everything that goes wrong; the rich gets away with everything.

American culture presented Presenting social circles that largely still exist in American society, and also the stereotyping of a group of people. Teenage anger and angst - especially from the perspective of a group of kids who aren't growing up in suburban, middle class, comfortable homes. The social force driving gangs and gang activity: the need for inclusion, the sticking up for one another like family, the hatred of rivals.
