6 Young Boy is Jumped in Gang Related Fight
Sample news article Young Boy is Jumped in Gang Related Fight A YOUNG MAN was jumped on the lower East side Tulsa, Oklahoma late Tuesday night. Ponyboy Curtis, 14, was walking home alone from the movies when he suddenly discovered he was being followed. “I had two things on my mind at the time,” said Curtis, “Paul Newman and a ride home. Getting jumped was not on my list.” Curtis was being followed by four members of a west side gang, the Socs, who were driving in a blue mustang. When the Socs pinned the young man down, Curtis started to cry for help. At this time, members of Curtis’ gang, The Greasers, showed up to rumble with the Socs. The Socs immediately drove away and left Curtis alone with his group friends. When the cops showed up, both parties fled, leaving many questions unanswered.

7 Sample editorial – Letter to the editor
Gang Violence Must be Stopped in Tulsa To whom it may concern, Gang violence is increasingly becoming a problem for our lovely town of Tulsa. I am referring particularly to the incident that happened late last night, when young Ponyboy Curtis was attacked by four men from the west side of town. Tulsa has developed two rival gangs, the Greasers and the Socs. These two gangs have divided our town by socioeconomic status. When being asked if Curtis felt safe walking the streets, he said, “Greasers can’t walk alone too much or they’ll get jumped.” Curtis needs to realize that the problem starts with himself being labeled in a gang. I realize that these young boys are at a severe disadvantage because of their economic backgrounds. It’s also not fair that the richer kids seem to be bullying those in need. However, there are alternatives to gang violence. We can increase funding for after school programs in our schools. If we can get these young boys distracted from their street lives, we can definitely put a big dent in the issue. In short, if we do not stop this problem now, we will be facing more violence between our teenagers.

8 Your Task Choose an issue from The Outsiders that allows you to present facts and create a claim. Write a one-page editorial that presents your stance using evidence from the story. Be sure to use facts to support your opinion. Include a counterclaim and include facts to refute it.
