S. E. Hinton wrote The Outsiders when she was just 15 years old.
The book is fiction, but it was inspired by real life events that Hinton witnessed in her high school.
S. E. stands for Susan Eloise. She wrote using her initials because, at that time, it was hard for female authors to get published especially when they were writing about male protagonists.
