Test Day Checklist Report to your assigned test center by the Reporting Time (8:00 a.m.) listed on your ticket. You will NOT be admitted to test if you are late. Bring a printed copy of your ticket to the test center. You will not be admitted to test if you do not have a printed copy of your ticket. ticket Bring acceptable photo identification. You will not be admitted to test if your ID does not meet ACT’s requirements.acceptable photo identification Testing staff will check your photo ID and ticket, admit you to your test room, direct you to a seat, and provide test materials. Bring sharpened soft lead No. 2 pencils with good erasers (no mechanical pencils or ink pens). Do not bring any other writing instruments; you will not be allowed to use them. A permitted calculator may be used on the mathematics test only. Texas Instruments: All model numbers that begin with TI-89 or TI-92 TI-Nspire CAS—Note: The TI-Nspire (non-CAS) is permitted. A short break is scheduled after the first two tests. You will not be allowed to use cell phones or any electronic devices during the break, and you may not eat or drink anything in the test room. (If you take the ACT with writing, you will have time before the writing test to relax and sharpen your pencils.) Students taking the ACT with standard time are normally dismissed about 12:15 p.m.; students taking the ACT with writing are normally dismissed about 1:15 p.m. On some test dates, ACT tries out questions to develop future versions of the tests. You may be asked to take a fifth test, the results of which will not be reflected in your reported scores. The fifth test could be multiple-choice or one for which you will create your own answers. Please try your best on these questions, because your participation can help shape the future of the ACT. If you are in a test room where the fifth test is administered, you will be dismissed at about 12:35 p.m.

General Test Taking Tips Carefully read the instructions on the cover of the test booklet.instructions Read the directions for each test carefully. Read each question carefully. Pace yourself—don't spend too much time on a single passage or question. Pay attention to the announcement of five minutes remaining on each test. Use a soft lead No. 2 pencil with a good eraser. Do not use a mechanical pencil or ink pen; if you do, your answer document cannot be scored accurately. Answer the easy questions first, then go back and answer the more difficult ones if you have time remaining on that test. On difficult questions, eliminate as many incorrect answers as you can, then make an educated guess among those remaining. Answer every question. Your scores on the multiple-choice tests are based on the number of questions you answer correctly. There is no penalty for guessing. If you complete a test before time is called, recheck your work on that test. Mark your answers properly. Erase any mark completely and cleanly without smudging. Do not mark or alter any ovals on a test or continue writing the essay after time has been called. If you do, you will be dismissed and your answer document will not be scored.

Test Day Tips Get plenty of rest the night before test day. Dress comfortably. Some test centers are warmer or cooler on weekends than during the week. Consider dressing in layers, so you'll be comfortable no matter what the room conditions are. Check your ticket for your test option—ACT or ACT with writing—Reporting Time (normally 8:00 a.m.), and the reporting location of your test center. If you're unsure where your test center is located, do a practice run to see how to get there and what time you'll need to leave to arrive by 8:00 a.m. If you arrive earlier than 7:45 a.m., you might have to wait outside until testing staff complete their arrangements. Bring snacks or drinks to consume outside the test room only during the break. Be ready to begin testing after everyone has been checked in and seated.

Tips for Multiple Choice Tests English Be aware of the writing style used in each passage. Consider the elements of writing that are included in each underlined portion of the passage. Some questions will ask you to base your decision on some specific element of writing, such as the tone or emphasis the text should convey. Be aware of questions with no underlined portions—that means you will be asked about a section of the passage or about the passage as a whole. Examine each answer choice and determine how it differs from the others. Many of the questions in the test will involve more than one aspect of writing. Read and consider all of the answer choices before you choose the one that best responds to the question. Determine the best answer. Reread the sentence, using your selected answer. Reading Read the passage(s) carefully. Read and consider all of the answer choices before you choose the one that best responds to the question. Refer to the passage(s) when answering the questions. Mathematics Read each question carefully to make sure you understand the type of answer required. Solve the problem. Locate your solution among the answer choices. Make sure you answer the question asked. Make sure your answer is reasonable. Check your work. Science Read the passage carefully. Refer to the scientific information in the passage when answering the question. Read and consider all of the answer choices before you choose the one that best responds to the question. Note conflicting viewpoints in some passages.

Tips for the Writing Portion of the ACT Carefully read the instructions on the cover of the test booklet.instructions Do some planning before writing the essay; you will be instructed to do your prewriting in your writing test booklet. You can refer to these notes as you write the essay on the lined pages in your answer folder. Do not skip lines and do not write in the margins. Write your essay legibly, in English, with a No. 2 pencil. Do not use ink, a mechanical pencil, or correction fluid. Carefully read and consider all prompt material. Be sure you understand the issue, its perspectives, and your essay task. The prewriting questions included with the prompt will help you analyze the perspectives and develop your own. Use these questions to think critically about the prompt and generate effective ideas in response. Ask yourself how your ideas and analysis can best be supported and organized in a written argument. Use the prewriting space in your test booklet to structure or outline your response. Establish the focus of your essay by making clear your argument and its main ideas. Explain and illustrate your ideas with sound reasoning and meaningful examples. Discuss the significance of your ideas: what are the implications of what you have to say, and why is your argument important to consider? As you write, ask yourself if your logic is clear, you have supported your claims, and you have chosen precise words to communicate your ideas. Take a few minutes, before time is called, to read over your essay: Correct any mistakes in grammar, usage, punctuation, and spelling. If you find any words that are hard to read, recopy them. Make any corrections and revisions neatly, between the lines. Do not write in the margins.
