Amy Kadrie, Recycling Coordinator NYSAR3 Webinar December 2015 Residence Hall Recycling

University of Rochester Undergraduate School 5,000 Undergraduate students All freshman live on campus Most live on campus all 4 years From all 50 states and >70 countries

Recycling 101: How we Recycle “Trio” Container System Plastic/Metal/Glass Trash Paper/Cardboard

New Labels

New Educational Posters! Framed in 150 locations across campus Designs Chosen based on survey feedback

Residence Halls: The Good EcoReps Program Blue bins provided in all rooms Students empty in central collection locations Central Trash containers/chutes

Educational InSTALLments

Residence Halls: The “Bad”/Challenge Upperclassmen Hill Court Area Recycle Bins in suites are emptied by Facilities Trash chutes No elevators; recycling carried down stairs by staff Off-site apartments not under waste hauler contract

Single Stream Recycling: An Opportunity? Pros: Increased waste diversion rate (may not be as accurate as reported) Easier for consumers Easier for staff (more likely to recycle correctly at loading docks) Improved ergonomics & more space in loading docks Cons: Plastic bags prohibited Increased contamination Loss of rebate for cardboard Cost increase containers/lids, labels and signage inside buildings education campaign/training

Single Stream Recycling: An Opportunity? Implement Single Stream on loading docks Inside academic/support buildings- keep dual stream reduce costs help minimize contamination keep fiber separate for potential future rebate opportunities Residential halls- transition to single stream collection? decreased cost- relabeling only (new containers/lids not necessary) decreased contamination students access to kitchens to clean material more likely to pay attention in their place of residence complete transition to single stream by July 2015 in order to leave enough time to change containers and signage and train incoming and returning students before the start of the fall semester

No sorting of recyclables required!! EcoReps to monitor and report findings

InSTALLment for Sue B Pilot
