How to Prevent Falling Copyright 2009, Florida State University College of Medicine. This work was supported by a grant from the Donald W. Reynolds Foundation. All rights reserved.

What should I know about falls Falls can result in major injury Injuries can range from bruises to cuts to more serious problems like a broken hip. Falls may prevent someone from living alone. Some people limit their activities out of fear of falling.

What Causes Falls? Most falls are caused by things around us: ◦ Slick floors ◦ Clutter ◦ Loose rugs Weak muscles Trouble with vision Balance problems Dizziness Side effects of medications

You are More Likely to Fall if You: Have fallen before Have weakness in your legs Are unsteady while walking or have balance problems. Are taking more than 4 medications. Have certain medical problems: ◦ Parkinson’s disease ◦ Heart problems ◦ Low blood pressure ◦ Previous stroke

How do I make my home safer? Have good lighting in each room Put night lights in your bedroom, bathroom and hallways. Keep floors clutter free and don’t keep things out that you could trip over Put hand rails and lights on stairs, handrails in the bathtub, shower and toilet. Wear shoes with firm, non-skid soles. Use non-slip mat in the bathtub and shower.

How else can I keep from falling? Get your eyes and hearing checked regularly. Stay active and exercise often Take care of your feet. Ask your doctor if you need a walking aid. Have your doctor check your medicines for ones that can make you sleepy or dizzy. Limit your alcohol intake to 2 drinks a day. Sit for 3 minutes before trying to stand out of bed. Consider an emergency alert system.
