John Cabot By :Tess, Alex, and mar

John Cabot John Cabot was a young Merchant In Venice Italy. He was a skilled navigator who wanted to explore the world. He had seen all the gold, riches, and new plants that Columbus had brought back with him From “Asia.” So Cabot wanted to find a new trade route to Asia. Like Columbus he thought the best way to get to Asia was to sail west across the Atlantic.

Starting his Voyage In 1496 Several Merchants agreed to pay for his voyage. King Henry VII granted Cabot Permission to find any new land. He only had one small ship and 17 men. They traveled around the coast of Ireland and then west across the Atlantic. They sailed north to avoid any claimed land by Spain. John Cabot’s route to North America

Land On June 24th Cabot reached present day Canada. He claimed all the land for England. He saw thick green forests and plenty of clean rivers with lots of fish but did not find any rich and exotic Asian cities. Cabot sailed back to England thinking that he found Asia so he told his king that he had reached Asia and will soon find his wealth.

Death The following year he sailed back to North America. This trip he may have explored as far south as Chesapeake Bay near present day Maryland. Cabot Died in 1499 but no one really knows how Cabot died. Some say he died in a shipwreck others say he returned to England and died their soon after he got there. Like Columbus he never knew if he reached the new world. But his Voyage opened a new way for European Settler’s to North America.
