Understand why software needs installing or upgrading Unit 29 Understand why software needs installing or upgrading

Learning Objectives Learn about the risks of installing or upgrading software Learn about the requirements in preparing for a software upgrade or installation Evaluate risks of installing or upgrading software and explain how risks can be minimised

Assessment Objectives Pass – Describe the potential risks of installing or upgrading software Merit - Explain the requirements in preparing for a software upgrade and installation Distinction – Evaluate the risks involved in the installation or upgrade of software and explain how the risks can be minimised

Pass - Risks What risks are involved such as down time and incompatibility issues What does this include? Inactivity while install is taking place Software may be incompatible with hardware New drivers may be needed

Merit - Explaining Requirements Explain what an upgrade is and what an installation is Plan – give the sequence of activities, what materials are needed, the timings of the install, plan communications of who you need to tell, plan back out procedures, make sure you have access and permissions, plan any contractual requirements Produce instructions and procedures e.g. who does what, select which software loading procedure to use Ensure you have all software and resources needed

Distinction Risks You can plan to reduce the risks of an upgrade Backup files and/or system Choose an appropriate low risk time for installation Check configuration Evaluate the risks that can occur and how they can be minimised It will best to do this after attempting P3

External Prompts for software bug fixes Sometimes a bug in the software is found after release. This may cause the software to crash or create security problems The manufacturer will therefore release a software update to fix the bugs These will normally be downloaded automatically by your operating system Some are urgent but others are not as urgent

Merit Task Look at the general prompts you have made for P1 and then give: The advantages for upgrading Office 2010 to 2013 The advantages of installing AVG Internet Security Suite The potential disadvantages of upgrading to Office 2013 from 2010 The potential disadvantages of installing AVG Internet Security Suite

Distinction Task In a business report justify the change of upgrading Office 2010 to Office 2013. This should show the benefits against the cost and other disadvantages
