Two versions are available:
XP Home Edition
XP Professional Edition

Before Installation
Check the Hardware Compatibility List (HCL) at
Hardware that is on the HCL has been evaluated and rated by Microsoft.
Hardware that is not on the HCL may still be compatible with Windows XP.

The Device Manager

Disk Management
Displays all physical hard drives that Windows XP has detected
Disk 0 is the first physical drive.

7. File Systems: FAT vs. NTFS
XP supports both file systems.
NTFS is more secure and robust.
FAT is backward-compatible with Windows 95/98/Me.
FAT can be converted to NTFS, but NTFS cannot be converted to FAT.

8. Windows XP Supports Three Types of Users
Administrator
Can create, change, and delete other types of users
Can install programs
Standard
Can make changes to computer settings that do not affect other users
Can install programs that do not affect other users
Limited
Can change personal password

Troubleshooters for hardware and software are provided.

Windows XP stores data here about programs, hardware, and users.
Other programs, such as Office XP, also store data in the Registry.

Summary
Windows XP is an enhanced and upgraded version of Windows 2000.
Windows XP hardware requirements will vary somewhat as a function of the intended use of the computer.
FAT and NTFS systems each offer unique advantages.
You can give Windows XP users a wide range of permissions.
You should not give Administrator permissions to every user.
