Designing Services Architecture

Terms to Understand Service: A set of bits installed on a farm that is capable of providing some functionality. Service Application: A specific farm-level configuration of a Service in SharePoint. Service Instance: An instance of a Service running on a SharePoint server. Service Application Proxy: A pointer to a Service Application that exists on the SharePoint WFE. Service Consumer: A SharePoint feature, such as a Web part, that communicated with a service and makes the functionality available to an end user.

Services Infrastructure and Design Principles You can deploy only the service applications that are needed to a farm. Web applications can be configured to use only the service applications that are needed, instead of all the services that have been deployed. You can deploy multiple instances of the same service in a farm and assign unique names to the resulting service applications.
